The Railway Children, which won the 2011 Olivier Award for Best Entertainment earlier this year, is to extend its second stay in London to 8 January 2012. It had been booking to 4 September.
E Nesbit’s classic 1906 novel told the story of three children whose lives change forever when their father is mysteriously taken away. Moving with their mother from London to rural Yorkshire, they befriend the local railway porter and embark on a journey of discovery.
Mike Kenny’s adaptation stages the familiar story over the tracks and platforms of the former Eurostar terminal at Waterloo. Having begun life at the National Railway Museum in York, the production enjoyed a first, Olivier-winning stay at Waterloo Station in 2010, before returning last month for a second run.
The production, which currently stars Marcus Brigstocke as station master Mr Perks, features a real steam engine from the National Railway Museum and the old gentlemen’s saloon carriage that was used in the famous 1970 film which starred Bernard Cribbins and Jenny Agutter.
