Lerner and Loewe’s lesser spotted musical Camelot, based on the King Arthur legend and winner of four Tony Awards in 1960, returns to the West End for the first time in over three decades tomorrow night; it’s London Musical Theatre Orchestra’s latest spectacular concert, following last year’s wonderful A Christmas Carol.
We briefly caught up with musical theatre favourite David Thaxton – formerly of Les Misérables and Olivier Award-winning for his role in Passion – to talk all things Camelot In Concert.

They’re going really good! We’re ready to get on the stage at the London Palladium right now!
It’s a famous story, what will surprise people about Lerner and Loewe’s musical version?
I think the truly interesting thing about this telling of the story is that, in spite of the grandeur of the setting, it’s a very intimate and relatable story.
There are issues that will strike a chord with many, be that the love triangle central to the plot, issues to do with the passing of time, and ageing or mental health. There’s a lot more going on than you might at first think.
You’re playing the legendary character of King Arthur! How would you describe him?
I like Arthur. He’s naive and youthful, but energetic and flawed and all sorts. He’s a good character.

How does it feel to sing backed by London Musical Theatre Orchestra?
They’re amazing, and the sound fills the room when they play. It makes me feel lucky to be on stage with them.
What’s the biggest challenge of Camelot In Concert?
It’s more of an acting role than a song-heavy role – which is very exciting!
Who, or what, inspired you to become a performer?
I have no immediate answer to that question! It’s the only thing I’ve ever done really.
It’s a one-night-only production – so why should audiences be there tomorrow?
It’s a great score played by a brilliant orchestra – with a great cast, in one of the most famous theatres in the world!
