On 2 July, the brand new musical, Prom Queen The Musical, will receive two workshop presentation at The Other Palace.
The show is inspired by the true story of Marc Hall – a Canadian teenager who took his district School Board to court when they refused to allow him to take his boyfriend to prom. The precedent-setting case was met with an international media storm. And from it, the blue-haired teen became the face of a generation fighting for equality.
Prom Queen The Musical is a fun and uplifting show where Marc has to learn to be his own hero, and fight society for the right to be himself and help others while he’s at it.
The Other Palace workshop presentation will be directed the theatre’s artistic director, Paul Taylor-Mills. The cast will feature Tony-nominated Lauren Ward (Matilda The Musical), Nathan Amzi (In The Heights, Rock of Ages), Caroline Sheen (Mary Poppins, Les Misérables) , Luke Bayer (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie), and Natalie Douglas (The Beautiful Game).
Prom Queen The Musical’s book is by Kent Staines, with music by Colleen Dauncey and lyrics by Akiva Romer-Segal, and Mary Young Leckie producing. Kent and Mary previously created the much-loved Canadian TV movie Prom Queen: The Marc Hall Story back in 2004.
This workshop presentation follows its run at The Segal Centre for Performing Arts in Montreal, Quebec (2016) after development workshops at Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton, Ontario (2015), The Canadian Music Theatre Project (CMTP) at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario (2014) and a Playwright Residency at Young People’s Theatre in Toronto, Ontario (2008). And it precedes Prom Queen The Musical’s planned Broadway run.
The Other Palace is currently hosting the sold-out Heathers The Musical featuring Carrie Hope Fletcher as Veronica Sawyer which received a workshop presentation last year.
Prom Queen The Musical will play at 3pm and 7.30pm on 2 July at The Other Palace.
