London’s largest free entertainment festival West End LIVE was launched last night at an exclusive event featuring performers including the stars of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert The Musical.
The evening event, held at Victoria’s Cardinal Place, also saw the West End Gospel Choir, Glee-inspired act The Gleeks and West End leading lady Julie Atherton entertaining the gathered crowds.
The launch, which was preceded by a lunchtime show featuring the casts of Billy Elliot The Musical and Wicked, was just a taste of what is on offer to theatre fans this weekend, when a host of London’s most popular shows will take to the stage in Trafalgar Square in a celebration of the incredible variety of entertainment on offer in the capital.
The line-up of shows taking part in West End LIVE, which is absolutely free to attend, includes long-running favourites, hit new productions and even shows that are due to open in London later in the year.
The hugely popular event in the London theatre calendar brings together a collection of talent, variety and passion that would be the envy of any festival and offers it all for free.
Around 500,000 people are expected to be treated to the finest live entertainment London has to offer at West End LIVE, which runs from 11:00-18:00 on Saturday and 12:00-18:00 on Sunday.
It is a year of firsts for the open air spectacular, with the event moving from its traditional home in Leicester Square to Trafalgar Square and being supported by MasterCard.
Speaking at yesterday’s launch, Cllr Robert Davis, Deputy Leader of Westminster City Council said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to our new headline sponsor MasterCard who, through their partnership with the Society of London Theatre, are actively supporting London theatre. It is the best theatre, not only in this country, but in the world.”
