Clwyd Theatr Cymru’s production of Jonathan Lichtenstein’s Memory, directed by Terry Hands, comes to North London’s Pleasance theatre on 30 September (press night 1 October) as part of a UK tour.
Memory, which premiered at Clwyd Theatr Cymru in 2006 before an off-Broadway run, is an intimate exploration of how we choose to remember events and the consequences of those choices. From a group of actors and their director in the rehearsal room, Memory takes us to East Berlin in 1990 just as the wall has come down. A young man arrives at his grandmother’s flat with awkward questions about the past. A generation later, the Israeli security barrier is going up.
Lichtenstein’s other plays include Station, staged by Soho theatre company, and The Pull Of Negative Gravity, which played at the Traverse, Edinburgh.
Two-time Laurence Olivier Award winner Hands is Director of Clwyd Theatr Cymru, the Flintshire-based theatre company which he saved from closure in 1996 and has since developed into one of Wales’s most prominent performing arts companies. A former Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company and founder of the Liverpool Everyman, Hands has directed theatre and opera productions around the world, including many productions for Clwyd Theatr Cymru.
The cast of Memory is: Ifan Huw Dafydd, Daniel Hawksford, Guy Lewis, Simon Nehan, Vivien Parry, Oliver Ryan and Tom Shepherd.
Memory plays at the Pleasance until 2 November.
