How do a cast prepare themselves when performing 3 back-to-back Chekhov plays in a single day? Olivia Vinall took us backstage at the National Theatre to find out…
Start of the three show trilogy day, trying to think of each play one at a time. Pre show is when some actors start on stage as the audience enter.
Into the dressing room, and the wig is waiting…
Costumes ready for the three shows.
11am, and the wig is on. Getting ready as Sofya in Platonov.
Quick change during Ivanov, the second play of the day. Costume ready and waiting for my arrival from previous scene.
All hands on deck for a 4 minute change.
Corset changing at speed is a little tricky…
Speed change done, and running on for Sasha’s entrance.
Getting ready for The Seagull, two down one to go. Looking at one of my favourite Russian paintings, changing headspace…
A beautiful card drawn by the wonderful Sarah Twomey in our company. Nina at her happiest.
End of the three shows, very soggy costume… an incredible day.
The Young Chekhov Trilogy plays at the National Theatre until 8 October. You can book tickets to see Olivia Vinall in Platonov, Ivanov and The Seagull through us.
