Peter Polycarpou reprises Pajama role

Published 13 February 2014

Peter Polycarpou and Colin Stinton will reprise their roles in The Pajama Game when it transfers to the West End later this year.

The duo, who originally played the roles of Vernon Hines and Hasler at the Chichester Festival Theatre, will appear in the production from 2 May when the show begins previews at the Shaftesbury Theatre.

Gary Wilmot will take over from Polycarpou as the factory timekeeper from 2 June.
Set in the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory in 1950s America, The Pajama Game charts the romantic tale of Superintendent Sid Sorokin and firebrand union rep Babe Williams as they fall head-over-heels in love.

But when the employees are denied a raise, sparks begin to fly between Sid and Babe as audiences are left wondering, will love eventually conquer all?

The trio of new cast members join the previously announced Joanna Riding and Michael Xavier, who will play the roles of Babe and Sid respectively.

A musical theatre actor with a career spanning more than three decades, Polycarpou was last seen on the London stage in the National Theatre’s production of The Magistrate. His role in The Pajama Game adds to the string of Chichester Festival Theatre transfers that he has previously appeared in, which include Sweeney Todd and Love Story. He has also appeared in West End productions of hit musicals including Les Misérables, Miss Saigon and The Phantom Of The Opera.

His successor Wilmot also has a number of musical theatre credits to his name. The actor and comedian has previously appeared in West End productions of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Copacabana.

Stinton was last seen on the capital’s stage in the West End transfer of Chichester Festival Theatre’s The Resistible Rise Of Arturo Ui. His other credits include Rain Man in the West End and Death Of A Salesman at the National Theatre.

Completing the cast are Alexis Owen Hobbs, Claire Machin, Eugene McCoy, Siôn Lloyd, Jennie Dale, Sharon Wattis, Keisha Amponsa Banson, Lauren Varnham, Jo Morris, Nolan Frederick, Richard Jones,  Dan Burton and James O’Connell .

Based on Richard Bissell’s novel 7 ½ Cents with music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, The Pajama Game combines romance and comedy with hit songs including Hey There (You With The Stars In Your Eyes), Hernando’s Hideaway and Steam Heat to create what is, according to The Times, “A romping, uplifting, funny, touching revival”.

Directed by Richard Eyre, the production will open at the Shaftesbury Theatre following the current run of Tim Rice musical From Here To Eternity, which closes on 29 March.
