The Peacock theatre will host the UK premiere of Pilobolus Dance Theater’s hit shadow dance work Shadowland next year.
Playing from 11 to 30 March, the show combines shadow theatre, dance, circus and music in a performance that cleverly fuses projections with front-of-screen choreography to tell the coming-of-age tale of a teenage girl.
Created in collaboration with SpongeBob SquarePants writer Steven Banks with an original score by musician and composer David Poe, Shadowland sees the girl transported into a dream-like world –The Shadowland – on her search for independence, encountering a host of weird and wonderful characters, from a mad chef to a giant hand, along the way.
The first theatrical production of its kind, Shadowland was created following the success of Pilobolus Dance Theater’s groundbreaking performance at 2007’s Academy Awards and has gone on to inspire a number of similar shows around the world.
Billed as a celebration of the strange transformative power of the dark, the production is designed to show audiences who and what we are in unexpected and thrilling ways, and has been seen by more than one million people worldwide.
Shadowland is just one of the shows set to play as part of an eclectic season at the Peacock theatre in the new year, with theatrical dance extravaganza The Merchants Of Bollywood taking to the stage in January followed by street dance craze Blaze in February. But that’s not before family favourite The Snowman brings plenty of festive cheer to the venue with its tale of a snow effigy who comes to life on Christmas Eve from 27 November to 5 January.
