Oval House theatre’s fifth annual summer school is inviting young people aged 11 to 16 to help create a production of The Grimms’ Tales, to be performed in the open-air in Kennington Park in August.
The summer school, held from 21 July to 16 August, offers the opportunity for young people interested in theatre – whether it be acting or working behind the scenes on costumes, sets, lighting and sound – to get involved in creating a production. The four-week summer school also provides the chance to meet new people, learn new skills and experience working as part of a team.
Among the most famous fairy stories collected by the 19th century German authors the Brothers Grimm are Rapunzel, Hansel And Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Rumpelstiltskin and Cinderella. Oval House’s production of The Grimms’ Tales centres on four lesser known stories – The Girl Without Hands, The Frog King, The Boy Who Went Forth In Search Of Fear and The Wolf And The Seven Little Kids. The show promises to lure its audience into the dark and magical world of dancing zombies, singing ghosts and a child-eating wolf.
Rehearsals take place at St Mark’s Church, Kennington Oval, from 21 July to 15 August, 10:00 to 15:00. The summer school culminates in four performances of the piece in Kennington Park on 15 and 16 August at 16:00 and 18:00.
To apply for one of 30 places at the summer school, download an information pack from www.ovalhouse.com or call 020 7582 6279. A place costs £40 and applications, with full payment, must be received by 14 July. Applicants must be able to attend the whole four weeks.
