The Royal Shakespeare Company is offering a day-long workshop at Hackney Empire on 7 February aimed at offering 8-15 year-olds the chance to explore Shakespeare’s Othello.
The workshop, entitled Othello Nights, coincides with the RSC’s latest production of Othello, which plays at Hackney Empire from 10 to 14 February.
Led by renowned urban arts collective Punch Records, Othello Nights – which is free to attend – is a practical workshop which uses contemporary urban art and music to explore Shakespeare’s story of power, prejudice, culture and deceit in a modern day context.
This production of Othello – Shakespeare’s tragedy about jealousy and murder – is directed by RSC Artistic Associate Kathryn Hunter, who has previously directed Everyman for the company, as well as the Bard’s Pericles and The Comedy Of Errors for Shakespeare’s Globe. Hunter is also a Laurence Olivier Award-winning actress who has appeared at the National Theatre and Young Vic, where she returns in March to play the titular apeman in Kafka’s Monkey.
RSC regular Patrice Naiambana, who appeared in the Histories cycle at the Roundhouse last year, takes on the title role in Othello, with Natalia Tena (Tonk in the Harry Potter films) as Desdemona and Michael Gould (The Ugly One at the Royal Court) as Iago.
There is no minimum age recommended for the production, though parental guidance is advised due to the subject matter of the play.
