Further casting has been announced for Terry Johnson’s eagerly anticipated West End revival of Stephen Jeffreys’ tale of debauchery The Libertine, with screen star Ophelia Lovibond set to lead alongside Dominic Cooper.
Best known for her recent roles in CBS series Elementary and superhero comedy Guardians of the Galaxy, Lovibond will tread the boards to play Elizabeth Barry, the actress whose chance encounter with Cooper’s hedonistic Earl of Rochester sends the promiscuous playwright reeling. Defined by his desire for overindulgence, the Earl is thence forced to re-evaluate everything he encounters.
Directed by the Olivier and Tony Award-winning Terry Johnson, the star duo will be joined in their 17th century London -based exploits by Jasper Britton as King Charles II, Mark Hadfield (Etherege), Will Barton (Alcock), Cornelius Booth (Harris/Huysman/Constable), Will Merrick (Billy Downs) and Richard Teverson (Sackville), with further casting still to be announced.
A wild 1670s romp through the capital that promises to scrutinise life in an age of excess, The Libertine was last seen in a 2004 film adaptation starring Johnny Depp. The show will play at Bath Theatre Royal for a limited run before transferring to the West End’s Theatre Royal Haymarket from the 22 September to 3 December.
