The hugely successful Almeida Theatre production of Ghosts, which won the Best Revival Award at this year’s Olivier Awards with MasterCard, is to be screened in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on 26 June.
Playing as part of the West End Theatre Series that has already brought fellow Olivier winner Merrily We Roll Along and Private Lives to the big screen, the June screenings give British and Irish audiences one last chance to see the performances that also won Lesley Manville and Jack Lowden the Olivier Awards for Best Actress and Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
Henrik Ibsen’s harrowing drama tells the story of Helene Alving, played by Manville, a woman who is set on freeing herself from the ghosts of her past by telling her son the truth about his cruel father. When her son, played by Lowden, returns from France, she discovers he has already inherited the legacy of his father’s sins.
Directed by Richard Eyre, the production proved so successful when it ran at the Almeida Theatre in autumn 2013 that it transferred to the West End’s Trafalgar Studios in December, running until March. Speaking to Official London Theatre at the Olivier Awards, Manville confirmed that discussions to transfer the production to Broadway in the autumn of 2014 were taking place.
