Screenings of the Old Vic’s hugely successful production of the Richard Armitage-led The Crucible will be shown in cinemas this December.
Enabling anyone who missed the five star production when it ran at the legendary theatre earlier this year to experience Yaël Farber’s electric staging of the Arthur Miller classic, Digital Theatre’s filming of The Crucible will be screened in more than 350 cinemas across the UK on 4 and 7 December.
Farber’s haunting production received an outpour of critical acclaim when it premiered in July. Writing for Official London Theatre, Matthew Amer described the “chillingly atmospheric” take on the Salem Witch Trials-inspired piece as “never far from exhilarating”, adding “[it] barely lets you take a relaxed breath. Three and a half hours have rarely charged by so swiftly.”
Staged in-the-round, The Hobbit star Armitage led the cast as John Proctor, the man at the centre of Miller’s timeless parable in which a small community falls into hysteria when personal grievances collide with lust and superstition.
Talking about The Crucible’s forthcoming cinema release, the Old Vic’s Producer John Richardson commented: “Farber’s mesmerising five star production of The Crucible is one of the most successful and most acclaimed in the Old Vic’s history. We are excited to finally be sharing one of the theatrical events of a decade with audiences across the country, thanks to our friends at DigitalTheatre.com and CinemaLive. Arthur Miller’s chilling, powerful and legendary work is truly a play for our times.”
The rest of the world will also have the opportunity to catch a screening with dates to be confirmed.
