The Old Vic’s programming of its new theatre space under Waterloo Station continues this autumn with Scorched, a new play by Wajdi Mouawad, which plays in the Old Vic Tunnels from 3 September to 2 October.
Scorched follows twins Simon and Janine, who are called to the family solicitor following the death of their mother for the reading of her will. They are shocked to find that their father is still alive, that they have a brother they knew nothing of, and that their legacy is to deliver letters to them both. As a result they journey into the past, to their mother’s previous life and Middle Eastern homeland, a country caught up in civil war.
Lebanese-born, French-speaking playwright Mouawad is the Artistic Director of French theatre at Canada’s National Theatre. His numerous plays include Littoral, which he also directed for the big screen, and the dark comedy Wedding Day At The Cro-Magnons, which gave Mouawad his UK debut when it was staged at Soho theatre in 2008.
Scorched is the second major theatre production in the Old Vic Tunnels following Beth Steel’s Ditch earlier this year. The unusual space was acquired by Kevin Spacey’s Old Vic in February this year to showcase productions, music and spoken word performances and installations.
