Full casting has been announced for Trevor Nunn’s forthcoming production of Scenes From A Marriage, which will star Olivia Williams as one half of the couple at the centre of Ingmar Bergman’s drama charting a union from seeming perfection to divorce.
Running from 11 September (press night 16 September) at the St James theatre, the director has gathered a group of stage regulars to complete the cast, with Mark Bazeley, who returns to the stage following his last appearance in the Bush theatre’s Our New Girl, set to lead the cast alongside Williams as husband Johan, while Shane Attwooll, Melanie Jessop and Aislinn Sands complete the company.
Alongside credits with the Royal Shakespeare Company and productions including The Seagull at the National Theatre, The Real Thing at the Donmar Warehouse and Cheek By Jowl’s Measure For Measure, Bazeley is a familiar face from the screen having appeared in numerous television series including Death In Paradise, Endeavor and The Accused.
While Bazeley’s role in the drama will mark the first time the actor has worked with Cats and Les Misérables’ famous director Nunn, his forthcoming co-stars Attwooll and Sands will both reunite with the director on the production. Attwooll, who appeared in West End hit Enron, made his professional stage debut in Nunn’s landmark Porgy And Bess at the Royal Opera House, while Sands, who has most recently been seen on screen in series New Tricks and Secret Diary Of A Call Girl, worked with the Olivier Award-winning Nunn on National Theatre productions of Troilus And Cressida and Summerfolk.
Completing the cast, Jessop returns to the stage following appearances in Chichester Festival Theatre’s West End transfer of Taking Sides, The Illusion at Southwark Playhouse and the Royal Shakespeare’s Company’s high-profile productions of King Lear and The Seagull, which played at the company’s home in Stratford-upon-Avon before being seen in the West End and travelling across the world.
Nunn’s revival of Bergman’s honest portrayal of love and turmoil will mark the beginning of St James theatre’s second year of programming, following its opening last September and a successful eight productions. Scenes From A Marriage follows the critically acclaimed The American Plan, which plays its final performances this weekend.
