A stellar line-up of performers comprising Max Bennett, Susannah Fielding, Nigel Lindsay and Marc Wootton will star in Mike Bartlett’s Olivier Award-winning play Bull when it returns to the Young Vic next month.
The office-set drama, winner of the Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre Award at this year’s Olivier Awards with MasterCard, will play from 11 December, with additional performances already added due to popular demand.
Shrek The Musical’s Lindsay, whose recent stage credits include the West End’s Speed-The-Plow and A Small Family Business at the National Theatre, will play Carter, the boss interviewing three colleagues for just two roles in a downsizing company.
Bennett, Fielding and Wootton will battle it out as the three potential candidates Tony, Isobel and Thomas. Posh’s Max Bennett returns to the London stage following his performance in ‘Tis Pity She’s A Whore at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse last year. Fielding, one of the readers of yesterday’s The Odyssey, was recently seen on stage at the National Theatre in The Beaux’ Stratagem, while Wootton’s recent credits include Nick Payne’s The Same Deep Water As Me, in which he appeared opposite Lindsay, at the Donmar Warehouse.
Set in a workplace-come-bullfighting ring designed by Soutra Gilmour, Bull follows the determined trio as each of their words become weapons and playground tactics quickly escalate into manoeuvres of a far more vicious nature.
Staged in the Young Vic’s intimate studio space The Maria, Clare Lizzimore’s production sees audiences surround the stage on all sides, with the braver among them able to observe the fight from close quarters by choosing standing tickets.
Bull will run at the Young Vic until 16 January and plays as part of an exciting autumn/winter season that also includes the John Heffernan-led Macbeth, Barrie Keefe’s Barbarians and Peter Brook, Marie-Hélène Estienne and Jean-Claude Carrière’s revisiting of The Mahabharata, Battlefield.
