West-End long-runner Les Misérables welcomes several new cast members from 25 June.
Joining existing leads John Owen-Jones (Valjean) and Hans Peter Janssens (Javert) in the French revolutionary musical are Gary Watson (Marius), Edward Baruwa (Enjolras), Melanie La Barrie (Madame Thénardier), Cassandra Compton (Eponine) and Claire-Marie Hall (Cosette). Joanna Ampil and Chris Vincent continue as Fantine and Thénardier respectively.
Watson was recently seen in Michael Grandage’s production of Evita at the Adelphi. Baruwa’s London stage credits include Les Mis director Trevor Nunn’s production of The Gershwin’s Porgy And Bess, Dancing In The Streets and Jerry Springer The Opera. La Barrie was recently seen in Boney M musical Daddy Cool at the Shaftesbury, in which she played Pearl, and previous to that originated the role of Mrs Corry in Mary Poppins. Compton was an X Factor runner up in 2004 and has London stage credits including Whistle Down The Wind at the Aldwych. Mountview-trained Hall is making her West End debut in Les Misérables.
The Royal Shakespeare Company production of Les Misérables, based on the novel by Victor Hugo, opened at the Barbican in 1985, transferring to the Palace later that year. It moved to its current home, the Queen’s, in 2004. On 8 October last year it celebrated its 21st birthday in London, so becoming the world’s longest running musical.
