The musical Hairspray has teamed up with family website www.mumsnet.com to offer free children’s tickets for Monday night performances from 5 January.
Mumsnet’s sponsorship means that for every top price adult ticket purchased, a child aged 16 or under can go for free. Carrie Longton, co-founder of www.mumsnet.com, said “Mumsnet is delighted to be sponsoring Happy Mondays, where children can go and see Hairspray the musical for free. Mumsnet supports anything that makes family life easier, and being able to take two adults and two children to see the ultimate feel-good family show for the price of just the adult tickets has got to be something worth singing about.”
Hairspray opened at the Shaftesbury theatre in October 2007 to popular and critical acclaim, going on to sweep the boards in the musical categories at the Laurence Olivier Awards 2008.
Based on the cult John Waters film, Hairspray is set in 1960s Baltimore and tells the heartwarming story of teenager Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with a big heart and even bigger hair. Mad on dancing, she auditions for the local television dance show, only to discover that her dance skills are overlooked because of her size. Determined to change the ways of sizeist – and racist – Baltimore, she sets out to win the dance competition, and earn the heart of Link Larkin in the process.
The musical stars Leanne Jones as Tracy, Ben James Ellis as Link and Michael Ball (Adam Price on Monday evenings) as Tracy’s mother Edna.
