Lucian Msamati will return to the Royal Court this spring to star in Bola Agbaje’s forthcoming drama Belong.
Directed by the Tricycle theatre’s incoming Artistic Director Indhu Rubasingham, Belong runs from 26 April (press night 2 May) to 26 May. The political drama is a co-production with leading British African theatre company Tiata Fahodzi, of which Msamati is Artistic Director.
The actor, who last appeared at the Sloane Square venue in the multi Olivier Award-winning drama Clybourne Park, will play Kayode, a British MP. Following a controversial defeat at the polls, Kayode flees to Nigeria and enters a political battle that makes him question what he believes and where he truly belongs.
Msamati is currently starring alongside Lenny Henry in The Comedy Of Errors, which runs until 1 April at the National Theatre. His other stage credits include Death And The King’s Horseman at the NT, The Resistible Rise Of Artuto Ui at the Lyric Hammersmith and Ruined at the Almeida theatre. Also well known for his television appearances in series including The Number One Ladies’ Detective Agency, Msamati will soon be seen in Rupert Goold’s BBC adaptation of Richard II and in the new series of HBO’s Game Of Thrones.
Full casting for Belong is to be announced. The production will follow Hayley Squires’s debut play Vera Vera Vera, which plays from 22 March to 14 April, in the Royal Court’s Upstairs space.
