Tim Whitnall’s biographical play about comedian Eric Morecambe is to come to London for a Christmas season at the Duchess theatre from 9 December to 17 January (press night 10 December).
Morecambe, which was well-received when it premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe earlier this year, celebrates the life and wit of the comedy star who died 25 years ago at the age of 58.
Eric Morecambe was one half of the much-loved comedy partnership Morecambe and Wise, whose television shows entertained millions in the 1970s, particularly at Christmas time, with one festive special on Christmas Day 1977 attracting 28 million viewers.
A fictional drama inspired by the comedian’s life, Whitnall’s play features the talents of Bob Golding, whose portrayal of Morecambe was described in a review for The Guardian as “the performance of a lifetime – precise, playful and commanding.”
Playwright and actor Whitnall’s previous plays include The Fabulist, The Sociable Plover and Harry’s Web, as well as the screenplay for film The Hide.
Morecambe plays at the Duchess theatre following Endgame, which plays until 5 December, and prior to Ghosts, which occupies the theatre from 8 February to 15 May.
