Morahan and Kay in The Real Thing

Published 26 February 2010

The full cast has been announced to join Toby Stephens in the Old Vic’s revival of Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing from 10 April.

Hattie Morahan, Barnaby Kay and Fenella Woolgar will star alongside Stephens in this comedy which examines the complex nature of love, art and reality.

Morahan is a London stage regular whose recent credits include Time And The Conways and …Some Trace Of Her at the National Theatre, The Family Reunion at the Donmar Warehouse and The City at the Royal Court. She has been seen on screen in the BBC’s Sense And Sensibility and films The Bank Job and The Golden Compass.

Kay, who has television credits including The Fixer and Wuthering Heights, was most recently seen on stage in the Donmar’s production of A Streetcar Named Desire last summer. His previous work includes the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of As You Like It at the Novello theatre, War And Peace at the Hampstead theatre and Dying For It at the Almeida theatre.

Woolgar appeared with Morahan in Time And The Conways at the National Theatre and was also seen in Motortown at the Royal Court. On the big screen she has credits including Mike Leigh’s Vera Drake, St Trinian’s and Woody Allen’s Scoop and his forthcoming Summer Project.

The Real Thing centres on Henry (Stephens) a successful playwright married to Charlotte (Woolgar), an actress playing the lead in his current play about adultery. Her co-star and friend Max (Kay) is married to Annie (Morahan), also an actor. Henry and Annie have fallen in love, but is it any more real than the subjects in Henry’s play?

The cast is completed by Louise Calf, Tom Austen and Jordan Young.

Anna Mackmin’s production plays at the Old Vic from 10 April to 5 June (press night 21 April), after Six Degrees Of Separation, which runs until 3 April.
