Millennium Centre’s Band gets London life

Musical drama I’m With The Band will become Wales Millennium Centre’s first London transfer when it opens at the St James theatre this August.

The show, a co-production with the Traverse Theatre Company that promises to mix theatre with live indie rock, will play at the Victoria venue from 28 August to 7 September after premiering in Edinburgh earlier the same month.

Written by Tim Price, whose play Salt, Root And Roe was staged at the Trafalgar Studios in 2011, the production follows the friendships and fallouts of rock band The Union, which comprises an Englishman, a Northern Irishman, a Scotsman and a Welshman. When financial disaster strikes and the Scots guitarist leaves, can The Union survive?

Speaking about the production, which stars James Hillier, Declan Rodgers, Andy Clark and Matthew Bulgo, Conrad Lynch, Artistic Director of the Wales Millennium Centre said: “We are delighted to be bringing our first collaboration with Traverse Theatre to the West End directly from its world premiere in Edinburgh. We are also thrilled to be transferring this production to the wonderful St James theatre, which is the perfect home for Wales Millennium Centre’s first London transfer.”

I’m With The Band opens at London’s most recently purpose built theatre following the run of current acclaimed drama The American Plan, which closes on 10 August, and the National Youth Music Theatre production of The Other School, a psychological new musical set in a rather creepy establishment of learning, written by Departure Lounge’s Dougal Irvine.
