Oscar winning composer Michel Legrand will perform for one night only at the Haymarket on 13 April. Legrand will perform his own work alongside singers Ruthie Henshall and Julian Ovenden, both of whom star in Legrand’s forthcoming musical Marguerite, and French singer and actress Marie Zamora. During this rare opportunity to see Legrand in concert, the composer will be accompanied by two of the world’s most accomplished jazz musicians.
Legrand has enjoyed a hugely successful career both as a composer and jazz musician, beginning at the age of 22 when his first album, I Love Paris, became one of the best selling instrumental albums of all time. He has since composed over 200 film scores for which he has won three Oscars. His work in musical theatre has also been highly revered, composing musicals including Umbrellas Of Cherbourg and Armour. His career has seen him work with musical legends Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Barbara Streisand to name just a few.
The concert takes place shortly before the opening of new musical Marguerite at the Haymarket in May, which Legrand composed alongside Seann Alderking. The musical, directed by Jonathan Kent, has a book by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, who have previously produced Les Misérables, Miss Saigon and Martin Guerre. Stars Henshall, Ovenden and Alexander Hanson lead the cast. em>CM
