Meera Syal as Miss Hannigan at the Annie media night

Meet Meera Syal, the new Miss Hannigan

Robin Johnson

By Robin Johnson Published 7 December 2017

Annie‘s Miss Hannigan can be a cruel, conniving and disdainful misanthrope at times, full of bitterness to the children she takes care of. Thankfully, Meera Syal, the brilliant actor, writer and comedian who has now taken on the role of the orphanage owner in the West End production, most certainly isn’t.

The hilarious star took a couple of minutes after her recent smash-hit gala night performance to answer some quickfire questions, talking favourite songs from the show, childhood dreams, and… pants. You can check out the video below (please note that you may need to be signed into Facebook).

Nikolai Foster’s West End production of Annie opened in May of this year with Miranda Hart as Miss Hannigan. In September, Strictly Come Dancing’s Craig Revel Horwood joined the company to play the role, before Syal began performances as the mean-spirited orphanage owner last week.

Annie is set in 1930s New York during The Great Depression, where the brave young titular orphan is forced to live a life of misery and torment at Miss Hannigan’s orphanage. Her luck changes when she is chosen to spend Christmas at the residence of famous billionaire, Oliver Warbucks. Meanwhile, spiteful Miss Hannigan has other ideas and hatches a plan to spoil Annie’s search for her true family…
