Max Bennett leads Globe’s Pity

First Published 15 September 2014, Last Updated 15 September 2014

Max Bennett will star alongside Fiona Button in Michael Longhurst’s production of ‘Tis Pity She’s A Whore when it opens at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse next month.

The duo will play Giovanni and Annabella, the siblings whose doomed incestuous passion threatens and throws into relief the hypocrisy of the Italian court, from 23 October to 7 December at the Globe’s indoor venue.

Bennett returns to the London stage following recent performances in Relatively Speaking at the Wyndham’s Theatre and A Time To Reap at the Royal Court, while Button’s stage credits include An Ideal Husband at the Vaudeville Theatre and the RSC’s Wendy And Peter Pan. The performers are reunited having both appeared in Laura Wade’s 2010 Royal Court hit Posh.

They are joined in the cast by Olivier Award winner Noma Dumezweni, whose credits include A Raisin In The Sun at the Young Vic and A Human Being Died That Night at the Hampstead Theatre, and Michael Gould, last seen in A View From The Bridge at the Young Vic. They will play Hippolita and Friar Bonaventure respectively.

The full cast of John Ford’s sensual and violent play comprises Stefano Braschi, Sam Cox, Philip Cumbus, James Garnon, Alice Haig, Dean Nolan, Jethro Skinner, Daniel Rabin, Morag Siller and Edward Peel.

‘Tis Pity She’s A Whore is the first production to play as part of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse’s 2014/15 season. The autumn/winter line-up will also see Mark Rylance star in Farinelli And The King and madcap comedy The Knight Of The Burning Pestle return to the venue.
