The Royal Shakespeare Company’s musical production of Roald Dahl’s Matilda is to come to London this autumn.
Though exact dates and venue are yet to be confirmed, the RSC and composer Tim Minchin have announced the show will have an “open-ended run” in the capital beginning later this year, with booking opening in May.
Matilda began life at the RSC’s home in Stratford-Upon-Avon last Christmas, enjoying rave reviews and subsequently collecting the Critics’ Circle Theatre Award for Best Musical in January.
Dahl’s Matilda tells the story of a young girl who is ignored by her parents and terrorised by her monstrous headteacher. But one day Matilda discovers she has a very special power and decides it is time the grown-ups were taught a lesson.
The story was adapted for the RSC by playwright Dennis Kelly (The Gods Weep, Orphans, Osama The Hero) and has music and lyrics by Australian comedian and musician Minchin. It is directed by West End regular Matthew Warchus, whose credits include The Lord Of The Rings, La Bête, Deathtrap, The Norman Conquests and the forthcoming Ghost The Musical.
No casting information for the London transfer has yet been announced.
