Roald Dahl’s much-loved story about a gifted girl with a horrible family has been enjoyed by the world since 1988. But it wasn’t until Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin paired up to adapt the book into a musical did it become the phenomenon it is now.The show first premiered at the RSC’s Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2010 before opening at London’s Cambridge Theatre in the West End in 2011. In its first year, the show won a record-breaking (at the time) seven Olivier Awards – still the record number of Oliviers won by a musical. In 2013, it opened on Broadway and won five Tony Awards.
Matilda has wowed millions around the world with productions not only on the West End and Broadway, but in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the Philippines and Korea. It’s won 85 international awards, including 16 for Best Musical, and it’s loved by children of all ages – even theatre critics.

But that’s no problem for the resourceful, rebellious girl, even when she’s pit against the dreadful, terrifying Miss Trunchbull – the child-hating headmistress at Matilda’s new school.
