Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio will join Ken Stott in Arthur Miller’s A View From The Bridge, which plays at the Duke of York’s from 24 January (press night 5 February).
In Lindsay Posner’s production, Mastrantonio plays the wife of Stott’s Eddie Carbone, a headstrong longshoreman. The couple are raising their orphaned niece Catherine, but when Eddie’s feelings for Catherine develop from paternal protectiveness to sexual desire, he spirals into self-destruction and his life starts to fall apart.
American-born actress Mastrantonio, who currently lives in the UK, was last seen on the London stage in Grand Hotel at the Donmar Warehouse in 2004. Her credits in New York include Twelfth Night and Man Of La Mancha, for which she was Tony Award-nominated in 2003. Best known for her film roles, Mastrantonio has starred in The Color Of Money, which earned her an Academy Award nomination, Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves and The Abyss. More recently she was seen in US television series Without A Trace.
Premiered in the US in 1955, A View From The Bridge was originally banned by the Lord Chamberlain when it was first performed in London and had to be staged privately.
One of the world’s most celebrated playwrights, Miller’s other works include The Crucible, Death Of A Salesman, All My Sons and The Man Who Had All The Luck.
A View From The Bridge plays until 16 May.
