Steve Marmion has been appointed Artistic Director of Soho theatre, replacing Lisa Goldman, who leaves her post at the end of June.
Marmion is not a new face at Soho theatre; he has been Literary Associate there for the past two years and previously directed Anthony Neilson’s play Edward Gant’s Amazing Feats Of Loneliness at the new writing venue.
A former Associate Director at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Marmion has worked with the National Theatre, Royal Court and Lyric Hammersmith, where he directed the pantomime Jack And The Beanstalk last year. This summer he will direct a production of Macbeth for young audiences at the Open Air theatre, Regent’s Park.
Commenting on his appointment, Marmion said: “Throughout my career I have worked across theatrical styles, from new writing to Shakespeare to sketch troupes all the way to pantomime. For me the combination of cutting edge new writing, the best in comedy, the reputation for brave collaboration and a young dynamic audience, makes Soho one of the most exciting venues in British theatre. I can’t wait to be part of the company’s next thrilling chapter.”
Soho’s Chairman, Nicholas Allott, added: “I’m delighted to welcome Steve to Soho Theatre. He stood out from an incredibly strong field. He is a real talent with a distinctive vision and I predict exciting times ahead for Soho Theatre.”
Marmion will join the Dean Street venue in July, working towards his first season in 2011.
Outgoing Artistic Director Goldman, who leaves her post after four years, announced her departure in November last year to “pursue other opportunities”.
