Lights dimmed for Taylor

First Published 24 March 2011, Last Updated 25 March 2011

London’s Theatreland paid tribute to actress Elizabeth Taylor last night, dimming their lights at 20:00 yesterday (23 March).

The performer, best known for her screen outings in films including National Velvet, Father Of The Bride, Cleopatra, BUtterfield 8 and Suddenly Last Summer, died yesterday at the age of 79.

Nica Burns, President of the Society of London Theatre, commented: “Elizabeth Taylor was a legend. A great beauty and an Oscar-winning actress. She portrayed some great stage roles on film including Maggie in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams and Martha in Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? by Edward Albee. Her all too few stage appearances – most memorably Private Lives and Little Foxes – sold out instantly. Her work for AIDS charities transformed the perception of AIDS. She will be much missed by the acting profession.”
