As a mark of respect for actor Richard Griffiths, who passed away last week, lights will be dimmed around the West End tonight.
From 19:28 until 19:30 the great theatrical tradition, which has previously been performed for figures including Harold Pinter, Laurence Olivier and Natasha Richardson, of lowering the lights along the theatres in Shaftesbury Avenue will once again be upheld.
In addition, the Wyndham’s Theatre, where Griffiths appeared in Heroes, and the Savoy theatre, the scene of his final West End appearance in The Sunshine Boys, will also dim their lights.
Mark Rubinstein, President of the Society of London Theatre, commented: “The dimming of the lights on Shaftesbury Avenue in memory of Richard Griffiths is a fitting tribute to honour a fine actor who made such a significant and lasting contribution to our London stages.”
