Hit musical Les Misérables has been crowned the winner of the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award at this year’s Olivier Awards with MasterCard.
The show’s 2014 triumph marks the long-running production’s second Audience Award win after taking home the only Olivier to be voted for entirely by the theatregoing public in 2012.
The musical stage adaptation of Victor Hugo’s iconic novel, which features unforgettable tunes including One Day More, I Dreamed A Dream and On My Own, is set in 19th century France and tells an epic tale of passion and destruction against the backdrop of a nation in the grip of revolution.
Currently celebrating its 29th year in the West End, Cameron Mackintosh’s legendary production rose victorious over 2010 winner Wicked, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom Of The Opera and the Royal Shakespeare Company’s seven-time Olivier Award-winning hit Matilda The Musical.
The show takes the title from last year’s winner Billy Elliot The Musical, whose cast members Anna-Jane Casey and Bradley Perret presented the award alongside BBC Radio 2 presenter Elaine Paige.
