Kimber Lee named first Bush PoNY

Published 5 November 2014

American playwright Kimber Lee is to become the inaugural Playwrights of New York (PoNY) Fellow in Residence at London’s Bush Theatre.

The winner of US accolade the Ruby Prize, Lee will write a new play under commission while in residence at the Bush, where she will also work closely with the local community and present her work through development sharings and a staged reading.

Speaking about the opportunity, Lee said: “The chance to spend significant time living in London and working with the incredible artists in the Bush Theatre community is a dream, and I am so excited and grateful for this opportunity to expand my artistic horizons.”

Founded by Sandi Goff Farkas and the Lark Play Development Center, since 2007 PoNY has helped support the work of emerging playwrights in New York and encouraged other donors and theatre organisations to do the same. It aims to launch playwrights into sustainable careers.

Speaking about the partnership, Rob Drummer, Associate Dramaturg at the Bush, said: “The PoNY playwrights represent such an exciting breadth of new American voices, and to be provoked by such strong plays was a delight. Kimber’s work stood out as an incredible fit for the Bush and already just early conversations have shown how exciting her time with us will be.”
