Three weeks after this year’s Kids Week kicked off to a raucous start at Shakespeare’s Globe with 100 children – quite literally – singing the praises of the kids go free campaign, the annual theatrical event has revealed that more than 105,000 tickets have been snapped up by families eager to take advantage of the incredible deal.
The huge success of this year’s Kids Week, which actually runs for the whole month of August for the second year in a row, was celebrated by Julian Bird, Chief Executive of the campaign’s organiser Society of London Theatre, saying: “The sales for Kids Week are incredible – and we would like to thank the many shows that have once again supported this annual initiative to enable children to enjoy the theatre in the month of August.”
More than 30 shows have taken part in this year’s campaign, offering the Kids Week deal that allows one child to go free to a participating show for every adult ticket purchased. While Kids Week may be entering its last week, there are still tickets on sale for a wide variety of shows including hit musicals A Chorus Line, The Bodyguard, Top Hat, We Will Rock You and Wicked, comedies The Ladykillers, Monty Python’s Spamalot and The 39 Steps, and concert spectacular Let It Be.
Supported by Ticketmaster, Kids Week aims to encourage families to take up the chance to experience the magic of live theatre, something Chris Edmonds, Chairman of Ticketmaster UK, was keen to point out when commenting on the success of this year’s campaign so far. “We are very proud to support Kids Week and it is fantastic to see ticket sales over 100,000 achieved so far,” Edmonds said, adding: “It’s great to know that so many young people will be getting into the theatre this summer.”
While Kids Week enables families to experience theatre from the comfort of one of the West End’s iconic auditoriums, the fun doesn’t stop there. Going one step further, the unique theatrical event also offers an amazing array of free activities and workshops alongside the ticket deal. So far this year children have learnt to sing and dance with the professionals at Jersey Boys and Thriller Live, furthered their ballet skills with Billy Elliot The Musical, put their questions to the stars of Wicked and The 39 Steps and even got crafty with We’re Going On A Bear Hunt.
