World War I drama Journey’s End, last seen in the West End six years ago, is to return to the London stage this summer.
The tale of a group of soldiers preparing to make a daring raid across no man’s land will play at the Duke of York’s theatre from 19 July.
RC Sherriff’s drama, based on his own experiences of life in the trenches, is set in 1918 at St Quentin in the days before the last major German offensive of World War I.
This production of Journey’s End, directed by David Grindley, was first seen at London’s Comedy theatre in 2004, taking audiences and critics by surprise and becoming an instant success. After transferring to the Playhouse theatre and then the Duke of York’s theatre, the production embarked on a UK tour.
The cast for the show’s West End run, which will end on 3 September, includes Graham Butler, Tim Chipping, Andy Daniel, Daniel Hanna, Simon Harrison, Nigel Hastings, Mike Hayley, Dominic Mafham, James Norton, Christian Patterson and Tony Turner.
Journey’s End’s season at the Duke of York’s theatre comes hot on the heels of the theatre’s current show, Ghost Stories, which closes on 16 July. The spectacular spook-fest has been scaring West End audiences since June 2010.
