Shakespeare’s Globe has announced the full cast of Romantics Anonymous, a new musical in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse directed by Emma Rice, with Olivier Award-winning Joanna Riding starring.
Riding (Carousel and My Fair Lady, National Theatre) will play Mother and Magda, with Carly Bawden (Twelfth Night, Globe) as Angélique, and Dominic Marsh (Tristan & Yseult, Globe) as Jean-René.
The cast also includes Marc Antolin, Philip Cox, Joe Evans, Natasha Jayetileke, Lauren Samuels and Gareth Snook.
With book written by Rice, lyrics by Christopher Dimond, and music by Michael Kooman, Romantics Anonymous is a funny, charming and awkward love story adapted from the French-Belgian film Les Émotifs Anonymes written by Jean-Pierre Améris and Philippe Blasband.
The musical follows Angélique, a gifted chocolate maker inhibited by social anxiety, and Jean-René, the awkward boss of a struggling chocolate factory, in an unusual and tender love story about finding the courage to be happy. Romantics Anonymous will be the final new production directed by Emma Rice as Artistic Director of the Globe.
Romantics Anonymous will play in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse from 20 October – 6 January 2018. You can book tickets through the Shakespeare’s Globe website.
