Jenna Russell, Marc Elliott and Jonathan Slinger will reprise their roles in Jamie Lloyd’s acclaimed production of Urinetown The Musical when it transfers to the West End this autumn.
The trio, who performed in the splashtastic hit when it played at the St James Theatre, will bring their performances as Penelope Pennywise, Officer Lockstock and Mr McQueen to the Apollo Theatre from 29 September.
Olivier Award winner Russell, who was recently seen in the Almeida Theatre’s production of Mr Burns, EastEnders star Marc Elliott and RSC regular Jonathan Slinger will be joined in the cast by original cast members Chris Bennett, Katie Bernstein, Cory English, Madeleine Harland, Rosanna Hyland, Karis Jack, Julie Jupp, Aaron Lee Lambert, Mark Meadows, Joel Montague and Jeff Nicholson.
Casting for the roles of Caldwell B Cladwell and Bobby Strong, who were played by Simon Paisley Day and Richard Fleeshman during the show’s run at the St James Theatre, is yet to be announced.
Featuring music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann and a book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, Urinetown The Musical is set in a futuristic world afflicted with a terrible drought, where a business tycoon has monopolised all public toilets and anyone caught short is sent to the infamous town of its title.
When Urinetown The Musical opened at the St James Theatre in March 2014 it was described by The Telegraph’s Charles Spencer as a “darkly entertaining and exceptionally sharp show”, while the Evening Standard’s Henry Hitchings said: “If you like your musicals bold and a bit Brechtian then urine for a treat.”
The show features songs including It’s A Privilege To Pee, Run, Freedom, Run!, Snuff That Girl and What Is Urinetown?, and will open at the Apollo Theatre following the current run of Let The Right One In, which closes on 30 August.
