The recent revival of musical masterpiece Sunday In The Park With George, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford, is coming to London’s Savoy Theatre next year.
Academy Award nomineee Jake and Tony Award winner Annaleigh will reprise their acclaimed roles as Georges Seurat and Dot respectively. The show will play a strictly limited West End run from 11 June 2020 and 5 September 2020.
The production of Sunday In The Park With George, which started life at the New York City Centre, became one of the fastest-selling musicals in Broadway upon its transfer to the Hudson Theater. Its transfer marks Jake Gyllenhaal’s first West End appearance since This Is Our Youth in 2002.
Jake said of the West End transfer: “Performing Sunday In The Park With George with the brilliant Annaleigh Ashford was one of the greatest joys of my career, I’ve also deeply missed the West End, and so to be bringing Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical there alongside Annaleigh is both humbling and thrilling.”
Annaleigh added: “Sharing the masterpiece that is Sunday In The Park With George with audiences, has been one of the greatest pleasures of my artistic life. It is an honour to play Dot again with genius Jake Gyllenhaal and to tell this story of children and art to the great city of London.”
Directed by Sarna Lapine, the show tells the story of an artist, Georges (Gyllenhaal), battling to complete his famous painting: A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. But consumed by his longing for perfection in his work, Seurat alienates friends, fellow artists – and his lover, Dot (Ashford) – unaware that the impact of his work will be felt 100 years later.
A masterful meditation on the impact of art, Sunday In The Park With George is penned by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim, who said: “We are thrilled that a London audience will get to see the recent Broadway production of Sunday In The Park With George with Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford reprising their extraordinary performances.”
