Breakin’ Convention, the annual hip hop festival, returns to Sadler’s Wells for its sixth year from 2 to 4 May, featuring performances from major international hip hop artists including Compagnie Revolution and Mr Wiggles.
Curated by Jonzi D, Breakin’ Convention is the only event of its kind and combines performances with workshops, films screenings, DJ demonstrations and impromptu freestyle sessions in the foyers of Sadler’s Wells.
French hip hop outfit Compagnie Revolution headlines on Saturday 2 May in a line up that also includes legendary US popper Mr Wiggles, performing in the UK for the first time since 1982, France’s Compagnie Zahrbat and several UK companies.
VII Gems Rock Dance Division featuring Ken Swift makes an appearance on Saturday before returning to headline the Sunday programme, which earlier in the day sees British acts take to the stage along with Compagnie Salama from Morocco and France’s Salah. Korean B-boy group Myosung joins Swift on the main stage in the evening.
Mr Wiggles returns to lead the line up on Monday 4 May, along with German company Flying Steps. Franco-German collaboration Sebastian & Raphael performs on the main stage in the early evening, with British companies Unity Youth, Myself Dance Company and Avant Garde.
Many of the acts performing during the festival are also leading dance workshops; beginners can learn the Boogaloo from Mr Wiggles, Ken Swift teaches the foundations of B-Boying, while Myosung and Salah give advanced dancers the chance to fine tune their skills.
The workshop programme begins at 10:00, and doors open at 16:00 for performances. For more details on all events and activities, visit www.breakinconvention.com
