Stephen Daldry’s production of An Inspector Calls, which returned to the West End in September for a limited run at the Novello theatre, is to transfer to the Wyndham’s theatre from 3 December.
J B Priestley’s haunting classic is set at the home of the wealthy Birling family, whose lives are shattered when a mysterious Inspector arrives with news of the death of a young woman.
Daldry, the director of Billy Elliot The Musical and films including The Reader, created this production of An Inspector Calls for the National Theatre in 1992. Acclaimed by the critics and the public alike, the production went on to run in the West End and on Broadway, collecting multiple Laurence Olivier and Tony Awards. Since then it has enjoyed several UK and international tours and a return visit to the West End which lasted eight years.
The show’s current visit to London provides another chance for theatregoers to see Ian MacNeil’s Laurence Olivier Award-winning set, which will be packed up after its final performance at the Novello on 14 November and transferred across Covent Garden to the Wyndham’s.
The news comes a day after The Shawshank Redemption, which is currently occupying the Wyndham’s theatre, announced it will end its London run earlier than planned, on 29 November.
Meanwhile at the Novello theatre, the Broadway production of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof opens on 1 December after previews from 21 November.
