Hit musical In The Heights is flying so high at the King’s Cross Theatre that it’s extended its run until January 2016.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip hop and Latin-inspired musical, which was originally set to play a four-week season at the venue, will now go all the way to the end of the line with the venue’s fellow hit The Railway Children, playing until 4 January.
Featuring a cast including Olivier Award winner David Bedella, Sweeney Todd’s Josie Benson, A Chorus Line star Victoria Hamilton-Barritt and former Sugababe Jade Ewen, the musical takes audiences on an uplifting and exhilarating journey into one of Manhattan’s most vibrant communities.
Set in Washington Heights, it charts the story of a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, and asks what it takes to make a living, what it costs to have a dream and what it means to be home.
In The Heights arrived at the King’s Cross Theatre on 3 October following a successful run at Southwark Playhouse. While critics are yet to have their say on the show’s transfer, The Guardian’s Michael Billington described it as “generat[ing] enough energy to fuel the south London power grid” following its London premiere.
The London production, which follows the musical’s four-time Tony Award-winning Broadway incarnation, is directed by Luke Sheppard and features choreography by Bugsy Malone’s Drew McOnie.
