Tony Award-winning musical In The Heights has confirmed it will return to London this autumn, playing a limited four-week season at the King’s Cross Theatre.
The Manhattan-set tale, which had its first London outing at Southwark Playhouse in 2014, will play in rep alongside the entirely different, English countryside-set story The Railway Children from 3 October to 1 November.
Featuring a Latin and hip-hop infused score by Lin-Manuel Miranda, In The Heights takes audiences on an uplifting and exhilarating journey into Washington Heights, following a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures where the biggest struggle can be deciding which traditions to take with you and which ones to leave behind.
The four-time Tony Award-winning hit premiered at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre in 2008 before opening at the Southwark venue in May last year.
Directed by Luke Sheppard with choreography by Bugsy Malone’s Drew McOnie, the musical’s London debut was described by the Evening Standard as “A slice of feelgood musical theatre easily as fun as any of its West End rivals”.
Talking about the transfer, Sheppard said: “We were overwhelmed by the response at Southwark and it’s a real privilege to be able to revisit this extraordinary musical. We’ve thought long and hard about the right way to bring the show back to London whilst keeping the experience up close and personal, and this is a brilliant space for us to take over and immerse our audience in the sounds and sweat of this passion-infused piece.”
Casting for In The Heights is still to be announced.
While In The Heights fans will have to wait until the autumn to see the much-loved musical, theatregoers heading to the King’s Cross Theatre this summer have two other theatrical treats to enjoy in the form of Mike Kenny’s Olivier Award-winning production of The Railway Children and hit family show Dinosaur Zoo.
Both productions are taking part in this year’s Kids Week, our annual ticket promotion offering a free child’s ticket for every full price ticket purchased for performances in August. You can book kids go free tickets for The Railway Children and Dinosaur Zoo at www.kidsweek.co.uk
