Ibsen’s marital masterpiece once again poses the ultimate question in Elinor Cook’s new version for the Donmar Warehouse: follow your heart, or settle for security?
The Lady From The Sea follows Ellida, the lighthouse-keeper’s daughter, who is trapped in her marriage and longs for the sea. When a former lover returns from years of absence, she is forced to decide between freedom and the new life she has made for herself.
BAFTA Award-winning stage and screen star Nikki Amuka-Bird (NW, BBC Two) plays Ellida. The production will star Ellie Bamber (High Society, The Old Vic) as Hilde, Jake Fairbrother (Twelfth Night, Crucible/ETT) as The Stranger, Jim Findley (Doctor Who, BBC) as The Stranger, Jonny Holden (Blood Stained Tree, Young Vic) as Lynstrand, Finbar Lynch (The Silence Of The Sea, West End) as Dr Wangel, Tom McKay (Frost/Nixon, Donmar) as Arnholm, and Helena Wilson (Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead, Old Vic) as Bolette.
Donmar Associate Kwame Kwei-Armah, whose last work at the Donmar garnered an Olivier Award nomination for One Night In Miami…, directs Cook’s new version of Ibsen’s brilliant play.
The Lady From The Sea plays at the Donmar Warehouse from 12 October – 2 December.
