Imagine someone winning two Olivier Awards in the same number of years. A pretty impressive feat by any thesps’ standards. Now add to that the fact they were awarded in two different categories, one for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a classic drama, the other for Best Actress in a Musical for a rather fluffier, but equally as acclaimed musical. And, while we’re at it, how about imagining someone achieving all that by the time they’re 30?
The much-loved Sheridan Smith is, of course, the not-so-imaginary actress in question and fans are no doubt chomping at the bit to witness her eagerly awaited return to the stage in the title role of Hedda Gabler next week. Joining her as Hedda’s famously abhorred husband will be fellow Olivier Award-winner Adrian Scarborough, with acclaimed actors Anne Reid, Buffy Davis, Darrell D’Silva, Daniel Lapaine and Fenella Woolgar completing the leading cast.
Photographer Johan Persson was on hand to give us a sneaky look behind the rehearsal’s closed doors before the famously intense drama hits the Old Vic theatre.
