Following a weekend celebrating the best productions to grace the London stage in the past year, our minds turn once again to the productions set to open in the capital’s theatres.
One such production – written by Lucy Kirkwood whose adaptation of Hansel And Gretel appeared among the nominations for this year’s Olivier Awards with MasterCard – is Chimerica, which opens at the Almeida theatre later this month.
While we immerse ourselves in this year’s theatrical offerings, Chimerica takes us back to 2012, where photojournalist Joe captures a piece of history whilst covering a presidential election in New York. After a cryptic message is left in a Beijing newspaper, Joe is driven to discover the truth behind the unknown hero he captured on film. Who was he? What happened to him? And could he still be alive?
Photographer Johan Persson snuck into rehearsals to capture the well-known heroes of Lyndsey Turner’s production – which include Stephen Campbell Moore, Sean Gilder, Trevor Cooper, Claudie Blakley, Benedict Wong, Andrew Leung and Karl Collins – in action.
