1001 Nights promises tantalising transformations of saucepans into crowns, old pipes into telescopes and mops into magic carpets. So, naturally, we were intrigued at how preparations for the show were coming along.
As the family adaptation of Arabian Nights prepares to go on tour prior to its Unicorn Theatre return next month, we were delighted to gain an insight into Douglas Rintoul’s plans for the Unicorn and Transport Theatre co-production, which transports the book’s abundance of stories to contemporary England.
Suitable for children aged seven and older, 1001 Nights follows the story of a young girl torn between her childhood in the East and her new home, as she leads her newfound friend – and the audience – into a world of kings, viziers and jinns through the art of storytelling.
After watching the video above, we may have discovered little more about shape-shifting saucepans or metamorphosing mops, but we do know that the show promises playfulness, plenty of props and, thanks to Zbigniew Kotkiewicz’s images of the rehearsal room, airborne plastic bags.
If you, like us, can’t wait until 5 June to find out more, watch Rintoul and cast members Samantha Béart, Keshini Misha and Krystian Godlewski talk about the production by clicking the trailer tab above.
