In Pictures: Joey marks 2,000 shows

Published 22 January 2014

It may be no ordinary sight to see a horse riding high above London, but Joey is no ordinary horse, and after 2,000 performances in the West End, the equine star of the hugely successful family show War Horse certainly deserved to celebrate in style.

Heading to the EDF Energy London Eye, a stone’s throw away from Joey’s old stomping ground at the National Theatre, where War Horse began life in 2007, the unlikely star took to the skies with the production’s talented puppeteers to see if they could spot the New London Theatre across the iconic skyline.

Carrying on the celebrations at that evening’s milestone performance, War Horse author Michael Morpurgo joined the cast for a special cake presentation to mark the occasion, revealing some unexpected secrets along the way, saying: “When I saw the first preview of War Horse, a while ago now, l thought it unlikely it would run for 20 shows, let alone 2,000…

“Somehow, and I shall never know how, the directors Tom Morris and Marianne Elliot waved their magic wands, with the help of Adrian Kholer and Basil Jones from the Handspring Puppet Company, and all the pieces fell into place. 2,000 performances later this iconic show goes on and has been seen now by millions.”
