There’s one lady we just can’t get enough of this week, and neither can you if social media, her Olivier Awards standing ovation and last night’s Gypsy press night are anything to go by.
It is, of course, Murder, She Wrote star Angela Lansbury who became an Olivier Award winner last Sunday after walking away with the Best Actress in a Supporting Role prize for her performance in 2014’s Blithe Spirit.
That role marked her first London stage outing in almost 40 years and, as she told us backstage after accepting her award at the Olivier Awards 2015 with MasterCard, “The wonderful way I was welcomed to London last winter was extraordinary. I couldn’t get over it and I didn’t want to leave.”
Thankfully she didn’t leave us for long and we’re now welcoming her back into the capital’s venues. While not in a performing capacity, yesterday evening she headed to the Savoy Theatre for the press night of Chichester Festival Theatre hit Gypsy, in which fellow Olivier Award winner Imelda Staunton plays Momma Rose, a role Lansbury played in the 1973 production.
Take a look at our gallery above to see the former Gypsy actress united with her 2015 counterpart and discover who else joined Lansbury for Staunton’s showstopping opening night.
