Billy Elliot The Musical is 10 years old. It’s almost as old as Billy, the character.
The hit West End show, which has been entertaining London theatre fans for a decade, has been described as “unforgettably brilliant” by the Observer, “shamelessly enjoyable” by The Independent and a “triumphant production” by The Daily Telegraph.
We all know that the view of critics don’t always align with those of the theatregoing public – many a long running hit has been roundly destroyed by Fleet Street’s finest – but with the story of a young boy who discovers a love of dance they were as in sync as a troupe of highly trained ballerinas.
10 years after the first Billy pirouetted across the Victoria Palace stage to Elton John’s fantastic score, the production is a multiple Olivier Award winner – both in the panel judged categories and the publically voted Audience Award – has staged a performance screened live to cinemas worldwide and has sent productions across the world.
The tale of the boy at odds with a mining community consumed by its own battles against a government sucking out its heart has gone far further than Billys original trip to London; Billy has gone global.
To celebrate a decade of daring to dance, take a look back at the last 10 years in images; from unlikely guest stars to previous birthday celebrations, former stars who’ve gone on to new projects and more Billys than you can shake a tutu at.
