What’s it all about?
Wonderful, brilliant, transformative, adventurous, life-changing stories.
Set in a library piled with beautiful books in their dozens, Michael Morpurgo’s magical and atmospheric story is brought to life by one woman who spins yarns like a pro and whisks audiences aged six and older to a mountain village where one boy, more keen on playing than school, falls under the spell of a very special librarian.
How do they tell the story?
As much a love letter to theatricality as it is to stories, Danyah Miller entrances the audience, young and old, as she uses the books piled on stage in increasingly ingenious ways. From streams of pages falling from the ceiling and providing the backdrop for magical projections to covers opening to reveal everything from chocolates to golden eggs, prepare for surprises at every twist and turn.
What did the kids like best?
Within the tale of Tomas and his village, Miller weaves in numerous tales to successfully keep an auditorium of kids compelled. There’s a completely improvised, brilliantly silly story created with the help of the audience and a mythical gem that the title of the show is taken from.
It’s Tomas’ pivotal tale that makes the show sparkle, however, and with Morpurgo’s common themes of war and the hope that can be found even in the most desperate of situations laced throughout, adults will likely find themselves surprisingly moved.
In a nutshell?
Whether you’re six-years-old or 60, prepare to be spellbound by this glorious, unique and imaginative love letter to storytelling.
Will my little one like it?
There’s no doubt. Short and sweet, fun and interactive, magical and poetic; I Believe In Unicorns deserves a place in the West End every summer. Like the books on stage, what at first appears a simple story reveals itself to possess hidden treasures you’ll cherish long after leaving the theatre.
I Believe In Unicorns is playing at the Vaudeville Theatre until 30 August. You can book tickets for the show through us or you can take a child for free with every full price ticket purchased through Kids Week.
